Band of Brothers is a critically acclaimed HBO miniseries that follows the exploits of Easy Company, a unit of the 101st Airborne Division, during World War II. The series is based on the book of the same name by historian Stephen E. Ambrose, who interviewed many of the surviving veterans of Easy Company. One of the most memorable episodes of the series is the finale, titled “Points”, which depicts the capture of Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest by Easy Company in May 1945. But what exactly was the Eagle’s Nest, and why was it important? And who was the dead German soldier that Easy Company found inside the mountaintop fortress? The Eagle’s Nest, or Kehlsteinhaus in German, was a lavish chalet built on top of the Kehlstein mountain near Berchtesgaden, a town in the Bavarian Alps that was a favorite retreat for Hitler and other Nazi leaders.
