This video is part of the international version of Tiny Desk, a joint venture between NPR and LG U , a Korean telecommunications and media company. Suraya Mohamed | January 5, 2025 NMIXX is not just another South Korean girl group. These talented ladies are accomplished singers who performed this 26 minute set in one take and without sound reinforcement wedges that musicians traditionally use to hear themselves better. It’s not easy for any group, especially one with six vocalists, to move out of their comfort zone of a traditional recording environment, but NMIXX fully embraced the Tiny Desk ethos. Using the natural room acoustics to hear themselves and the band, the singers’ intonation and vocal execution was superb as they sang arrangements carefully prepared for this special setting. “This is exciting,” said leader and main vocalist HAEWON. “It’s our first time singing without in-ear monitors. We can feel the vibe of this place.” That feeling was evident not only in the authenticity and spontaneity of the music, but also during the banter in between the songs. Unchoreographed and casual, they laughed as they tried to figure out if one of the toy instruments was a glockenspiel or a xylophone. This dynamic five song set includes a mix of genre influences like pop, old school hip-hop and country styles, and ends with two new songs, “See that?” and “Love Is Lonely” from their latest EP, Fe304:STICK OUT released last August.
