Music: Charles W. A. Ellerbrock Lyrics: George Henry Miles 'God Save the South' was written in 1861 as a rallying song for southerners comparable to 'Battle Hyme of the Republic' in The Union. God Save the South was one of the unofficial national anthems of the Confederate States of America, but is often overshadowed by 'Dixie' which was popular in the south at the time. Although Dixie was a minstrel show song written in the 1850s by a man from Ohio ( Daniel Decatur Emmett) while 'God Save the South' was written specifically as an anthem of the CSA by a southerner, it is often regarded as the official unofficial anthem of the CSA.
