For many people, the first thing that comes to mind when asked about Heinrich Heine is “Die Lore--Ley“. “Das Lied von der Loreley“ is probably the best know poem by Heine, besides “Deutschland - Ein Wintermärchen“. It is about the mythical figure of the Loreley by Clemens Brentano, a mermaid who bewitches seamen on their way along the Rhine with her songs and drowns them in the river. According to the legend, she is sitting on the Loreley Rock near Sankt Goarshausen in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. This Rock is still an exciting sight when visiting the Rhine and attracts many tourists all over the world. Attempt at translation: I do not know what it means That I am so sad A fairy tale from ancient times Doesn’t get out of my head The air is chilly and it’s darkening And calmly flows the Rhine The peak of the mountain is sparkling In the evening’s sunshine A most beautiful maid is sitting Wonderfully very up there Her golden jewelry is twinkling She’s combing her golden hair She’s combing with a golden comb And keeps singing a song It has a wondrous Overwhelming melody The mariner on his tiny ship Is caught by a wild balefulness He does not watch the reefs He’s only watching up high In the end the waves, I suppose Devour the mariner and ship And this was the act Of the Loreley
