According to the world media, the Ministry of Defense of Serbia is currently considering several options for the acquisition of a new class of multi-purpose combat aircraft to modernize the fleet of its air force, which at the time of growing tensions in the Balkans has only limited opportunities to secure Serbia's airspace and deny air superiority to potential aggressors. The fighter acquisitions will follow the purchase of new air defense systems to modernize Serbia's Cold War-era network, which has recently been enhanced with new Russian Pancir-S1 short-range systems and Chinese FK-3 medium-range systems with an export version of the original Chinese HQ-22 long-range air defense system. The threat of Western economic sanctions for large purchases of Russian arms could deter Serbia from considering Russian fighter jets such as the MiG-35 '4 generation' or fifth-generation multirole fighter jets such as the Sukhoi Su-75 Checkmate and believes is that this was the main reason that led the authorities in Belgrade to acquire the Chinese FK-3 air defense system, rather than Russian alternatives such as the BuK-M3 or the S-300PMU-2. Although China has begun offering the FC-31 fifth-generation fighter jet to the J-31-based export fighter for the Chinese Air Force, this is expected to be unaffordable for Serbia, leaving the lighter J-10C and JF-17 Block III as more likely options for purchasing a fighter plane for the Serbian Air Force.
