Join the CapoeiraLife Family Whatapp Group - today i will be teaching the basics of playing berimbau for those who want to play better and those who are taking their first steps playing the berimbau this video will help you reach a higher level of playing much faster this is the first video of the new berimbau playing playlist that I'm currently creating in the following videos I will be teaching you different rhythms and tips you will be able to implement right away if this is you first time approaching this amazing instrument i would love to teach a little about it the berimbau is a single-string percussion instrument, a musical bow, originally from Africa, that is now commonly used in Brazil in capoeira circles it is called berimbau because its made mostly from birba tree which is flexible and strong so it could maintain the pressure created to keep the string strained the string is called arame its simply a metal wire with a loop on both ends tied on one end and hooked on the other and a Gourd( I'm not sure about the pronunciation) dried, opened and hollowed-out, attached to the lower portion of the birba by a loop of tough string, acts as a resonator. lastly Pedra or Dobrão: small stone or coin pressed against the arame to change the tone of the berimbau Baqueta: small stick struck against the arame to produce the sound Caxixi: small rattle that optionally accompanies the baqueta in the same hand Capoeiristas split berimbaus in three categories: Gunga some call it Berra-boi and it has the lowest tone Médio medium tone and Viola with highest tone usually capoeira circles called roda have all 3 berimbaus are playing together in harmony to each a different rhtyem- toque in pourtgese and a diffrent role next i will cover holding the berimbau the right way, the diffrent sounds you can create and 3 drills to better your technique in order to play the berimbau nicely its important to have a good control so inorder for you to be able to focus on actually playing you need to develop control holding to berimbau the berimbau is held by the pinky finger from below the ring in middle fingers hold the birba the index and thum will hold the pedra first drill for holding the berimbau will be moving it from you stomach forward side to side and down you can practice this standing and sitted try having you shoulder down and relaxed next is holding the baqueta there are 2 ways to hold it I'm more used to this one when hitting the arame let the baqueta bounce off so it will have a clean one hit sound move the baqueta only using your fingers and a little bit of a your wrist your hand shouldn't move much i find hitting downwards is more comfortable your volume is controlled by the range and speed of your hit now adding the pedra its important to have you thumb as if it was going out straight out of the biriba that way when you will push the pedra against the string it wont slip hold you the pedra in upwards diagonal that will also help you have more control of the pedra there are 3 diffrent sound you can make the buzz sound also called tin touching the pedra to the arame gently secondly din pushing the pedra onto the arame watch out for finishing the sound cleanly and not with a tin either keep the pedra pushed onto the arame until there's not sound or take it off in one movement and the third sound is with out touching the pedra to the arame called dom in the first two sounds you hit above the pedra and with the open sound below the pedra when playing the buzz sound the cabace will be closed next to the body and with the other two sounds the cabaca is opened before getting to the drills i learned from mestre edan lets see if we can get this video to 200 likes because that will tell me you're loving this content now the next challenge switching between the diffrent sounds and keeping them clear and nice so 3 recommended drills are tin tin din two buzz sounds with the pedra gently touching the arame and one din pushing the pedra to the arame tin tin dom starting the same and finishing with open sound and putting them together tin tin din tin tin dom with all of these drills try playing them on repet in different tempo if you want to learn how to string a berimbau here's an old video i made and here i you will have the berimbau playlist i was talking about at the begging of the video as soon as it will be ready axe 🤸 Get the CAPOEIRA ANGOLA LIBRARY Master the capoeira angola game with simple & clear training methods: 📧 LIKE MY CAPOEIRA VIDEOS?
