Known for his teamwork, stamina and powerful shot, he received his nickname after Benfica's 1980s Danish forward Michael Manniche. He played top-flight football in Portugal, Russia, England, Spain, Italy and Germany. In 2004 he helped Porto win the Champions League, one of eight major trophies conquered with that club. He amassed Primeira Liga totals of 177 games and 31 goals over the course of seven seasons.
