An earthquake measuring 4.8 struck the Australian state of New South Wales at midday on Friday. The epicentre was at a depth of 5 kilometres, 120 kilometres from Newcastle. It was the strongest earthquake to hit the region in 20 years. The initial quake was followed by two aftershocks. The quake was also felt in Sydney and Canberra. More than 2,000 people reported feeling the quake. Eyewitnesses are sharing footage of the disaster on social media. Furniture shook in homes, and objects fell off shelves. Some residents fled their homes. Minor damage to homes was reported. There were no reports of injuries or serious damage.
