He received lessons in the Senia Maihar style from his father Parthapratim Chatterjee. Sitar maestro Pandit Nikhil Banerjee’s music continues to act as a great source of inspiration for him. Purbayan Chatterjee is also an accomplished vocalist. He is one of the few from the Indian classical music fraternity, who have successfully fused the traditional form of music, with jazz. His soulful and deft performances have drawn praise in the concert circuit in India and abroad. In the second edition of Bengal Classical Music Festival held in 2013 in Dhaka, Purvayan Chatterjee on the sitar started with the raga Jayjayvanti followed by the raga Darbari Kanra, where he adhered to a Dhrupad style in the alaap and jor.
