Originally a castle was built at Warwick following the Norman Invasion of England, ordered by William the Conqueror. For centuries it was owned by the wealthy Earls of Warwick, who transformed it into a formidable defence and prison. It features the infamous Oubliette and saw prisoners housed here following the 100 Years War. Even Edward II's favourite, Piers Gaveston was imprisoned at Warwick. It's reputation as an amazing and impressive structure is one that sees hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the world visit it each year.
