Directed by Abel Kavanagh & Amaru Durand Mitre A gift from the Pacha Mama, the coca leaf has sparked significant debate, particularly as the global debate and discussion on decriminalization and legalization of narcotic drugs intensifies. We set out to look at this plant from a new perspective, hoping to decry the established link between the sacred leaf and the illegal drug derived from it : cocaine. In doing so, we travel along the nerves of the coca leaf, moving gradually from the traditional to the industrial world, through Bolivia and Peru, from yesterday to today on a journey that reveals the vital social and cultural importance of the coca leaf to people across these two countries and the broader region.
