Degeneracy of codons is the redundancy of the genetic code, exhibited as the multiplicity of three-base pair codon combinations that specify an amino acid. The degeneracy of the genetic code is what accounts for the existence of synonymous mutations. Silent mutations are mutations in DNA that do not have an observable effect on the organism’s phenotype. They are a specific type of neutral mutation. The phrase silent mutation is often used interchangeably with the phrase synonymous mutation; however, synonymous mutations are not always silent, nor vice versa. #DegeneracyOfCodons #SilentMutations #neutralMutation #synonymousMutation #NikolaysGeneticsLessons #FrameshiftMutation #missenseMutations #DNA #mRNA #codons #aminoAcids #nucleicAcids #Transversion #PointMutation #missenseMutation #nonsenseMutation
