Mars owls are distributed in Africa and Madagascar. An isolated population exists in extreme northwest Africa in Morocco. Marsh owls are typically found singly or in pairs. They are usually nocturnal however they have been recorded to be active during early morning and late afternoon. The Marsh owl typically feeds on small rodents, insects and other small vertebrates. They are not listed as vulnerable or endangered, but their population is on the decline mainly due to loss of habitat through urbanization. Marsh Owls commonly breed during the winter months when veld fires occur. They nest on the ground in habitat that typically includes marshes, savannas and grasslands.
