Biden concedes Houthis haven’t been deterred from carrying out attacks as U.S. launches further strikes 미군 “후티, 美유조선에 미사일 발사 피해보고 없어“ Turning to the conflicts in the Middle East. Iran-backed Houthis have launched two missiles at a tanker in the Gulf of Aden. President Biden says their counteroffensive against the Houthis will continue. Jeong Eun-joo has the latest. The U.S. launched new strikes against Iranian-backed Houthi rebel military sites in Yemen on Thursday, as growing tensions in the region's sea lanes disrupted global trade and raised fears of supply bottlenecks that could reignite inflation. The U.S. Central Command said in a statement posted to X, formerly known as Twitter, that the latest strikes targeted two Houthi anti-ship missiles that “were aimed into the southern Red Sea and prepared to launch,“ and deemed “an imminent threat“ to shipping and U.S. Navy vessels in the region. The Pentagon said they were conducted by Navy F/A-18 fighter aircraft. President Joe Biden acknowledged that the American and British bombardment had yet to stop the militants’ attacks on vessels in the Red Sea that have disrupted global shipping. He said, however, that the U.S. military response would continue, during an exchange with reporters before departing the White House. “Well, when you say working, are they stopping the Houthis? No. Are they going to continue? Yes.“ Hours after, a Houthi official said in a prerecorded statement that its forces had carried out another missile attack against the Marshall Islands-flagged, cargo ship Chem Ranger. The official said the attack took place in the Gulf of Aden, waters just south of Yemen. The U.S. Central Command said in a statement late Thursday that the ship was not affected by the attack. Attacks by the Iran-allied Houthi militia on ships in and around the Red Sea since November have slowed trade between Asia and Europe and alarmed major powers, in an escalation of the war between Israel and Palestinian Hamas militants in Gaza. The Houthis say they are acting in solidarity with Palestinians and have threatened to target U.S. ships in response to American and British strikes on the group's positions.
