Sometimes its hard to believe that once this line was home to ALCO S series diesels of the Port Huron & Detroit Railroad. It's business like usual on CSX's isolated Port Huron Subdivision on the PH&D Industrial Branch. CSX L307 (or L306 if it came from Flint, not sure if it did) saunters southbound on jointed rails that span 14 miles from Port Huron to East China, Michigan. On this abnormally warm day, I caught them at Marysville Park (where you can see Detroit Edison 0-6-0 #203) and one more time at Cuttle Road. It's pretty easy to follow trains here as they only get up to about 10-15 mph, assuming traffic doesn't get in your way. This line began in 1901 as the Port Huron Southern Railroad running from Port Huron to Marysville. With plans to expand to Detroit, the Port Huron & Detroit was incorporated in 1917, but the line only got as far south as Marine City. Nonetheless, the PH&D served numerous local and large industries until 1984 when it was sold to the Chesapeake and Ohio. CSX took over in 1987, and the line had been scaled back from Marine City to East China at the Detroit Edison power plants. Today CSX sees consistent traffic as they interchange with CN at Tunnel Yard and serve: Marysville Ethanol, transloading at St. Clair Yard, Dynamic Polymer Solutions, Engineered Plastic Components, Plains LPG Service, and Cargill Salt. Two trains run the line, L307 switching the industries, and L306 coming from Flint via the CN Flint Subdivision. Equally as isolated, CSX has a line across the St. Clair River in Ontario called the Sarnia Subdivision, dating back to the Pere Marquette days.
