An elderly woman in Xiangyang, China recently discovered that she’d been cheating death for the last 20 years, all because of her hammer, purposed from a lump of metal she’d found while farming. This makeshift hammer, used to crack nuts, grind peppercorns and fix nails to the wall for two decades without incident, was actually a hand grenade, and this was only discovered when workmen recognized it. They immediately told the authorities, who arrived to deprive the woman of her trusty hammer, handing it safely over to a bomb disposal team. Following the find, local police felt obliged to put out a PSA: ‘If you find any suspicious objects that look like hand grenades, you must report it to the police immediately. Do not touch it or use it as a hammer, or the consequences could be disastrous!’ That’s all very well, but have you seen the prices at Home Depot these days?
