The boy searches for a new purpose, and for love. [The Death and the Berth, The Procession] Hunter discovers the bloodied corpse of his mother, Terri, the only person that he ever knew. All he really had is gone. He buries his mother under the Tree, and makes the decision to journey off into the world, despite what she always told him. [The Lake and the River] The lonely boy struggles to think of reasons to keep going, but surely there's something out there waiting for him. His mind is beginning to twist, and blame Terri for the lonely life he's been forced into. Her face will haunt him for the years to come. He sets out into the world beyond. He sees the Tree one last time; its branches and leaves now withered away. The world around him appears bitter now that she's gone, as if everything is against everything. Pressing on, he finds a train station, and boards it as it stops. [Oracles on the Delphi Express] A group of old men wait inside the train as Hunter enters. They tell Hunter to stop now, he won't find any answers beyond, and to go back and live his life at the Lake. Hunter ignores their repeated warnings. [The Church and the Dime] Hunter arrives in the City, taken aback by its size. He gravitates towards the two most influential buildings he sees; the Church and the Dime, unknowingly wandering back to where he came from. [The Bitter Suite I, II, & III] Hunter comes across a beautiful woman called Ms. Leading. She takes him into the Dime and into her room, while Hunter is completely unaware of what this situation actually is. He immediately falls in love, and assumes that she is feeling the same. They spend a night together in the Dime. [Smiling Swine] Hunter wakes up alone, feeling better than he ever has. He runs through the Dime searching for Ms. Leading, but meets the Pimp instead. They begin to talk, and the Pimp recognizes Hunter's naivete, and capitalizes on the fact that he can use the boy's ignorance to benefit himself. The Pimp suggests to Hunter that he can get a job as a driver and he'll be able to see his newfound love again. Hunter began his job as a driver for Ms. Leading, not realizing that he was taking her to clients. [Evicted, Blood of the Rose, Red Hands] Ms. Leading began to genuinely feel love for Hunter as time went on, but everything soon fell apart. Hunter took her to one of her destinations, but she forgot her scarf in the car. Hunter rushed into the house to give it to her, only to find her with another man. He feels entirely betrayed, but slowly realizes the reality of the situation, and his ignorance. [Where The Road Parts, Dear Ms. Leading] Ms. Leading attempts to meet with Hunter where they first met so that they can talk through this, but Hunter entirely ignores her. She starts to feel like she's completely worthless. They eventually begin to exchange letters, Hunter clearly trying to break away from her for good. [Black Sandy Beaches] An unknown and unnamed woman walks along the beach, and finds letter after letter scattered across broken bottles, all from “Ms. Leading“ and “Hunter“. She tries to piece together their story, and mourns how their love ended up falling apart. [Vital Vessels Vindicate] Hunter looks for a new purpose in life once more. He leaves the City as a soldier in the army. He says goodbye to the Oracles, the City, his home by the Lake, and to his first love. He sings his mother's lullaby as the ship sails into the distance, towards a new life in the war, ignorant to how harsh this place will be.
