It is a striking bird with black and white plumage and a bare red patch on the breast, which darkens during the breeding season. Its massive, red bill has a black band and a yellow shield which appears as a saddle – for which it is named. Males and females are alike, except for the brown eyes and yellow wattles of the male. Females lack wattles and have yellow eyes. Vocalizations Saddle-billed storks are silent birds – they are not known to have any call or song, but nesting birds make clattering noises with their bills. Distribution and range The saddle-billed stork is native to sub-Saharan Africa, from Ethiopia to South Africa.
