Flights at the Ramstein Air Base had to be temporarily suspended. Roads were slippery and visibility was poor due to blizzards accompanied by thunder and lightning, a rare weather event known as a “blizzard.“ The storm stopped power supply to more than 33 settlements in the area. Local police said that some places were still without electricity. Air Force civilian engineers were still assessing damage at Ramstein Air Force Base after clearing snow from roads and flight lines overnight, 86th Wing spokesman Kelly Sanders said. Crews found at least eight downed trees, some of which blocked roads or damaged fences, she said. The two planes that arrived were sent to land at Spangdal Air Base in southwestern Germany and in Frankfurt. The Rhineland-Palatinate Army Garrison reported that roads in the Baumholder area were slippery and icy, and advised soldiers and their families to drive with caution, especially on secondary roads and in rural areas.
