Infant step reflex assessment in newborn: Pediatric nursing NCLEX review. In this video, Nurse Sarah assesses for the step reflex in a newborn / infant. The step reflex occurs when the infant is placed upright with its legs and feet touching a surface. As you can see in the video, the infant will generally try to take steps as an automatic reflex, despite having the inability to walk. This reflex will generally disappear around 3-4 months of age.
