Robert Burns (1759–1796) wrote this love song for Mrs. Agnes “Nancy” Craig M’Lehose—“Clarinda” to Burns’ “Sylvander” in their coy cat-and-mouse correspondence. M’Lehose was separated from her husband, who was involved in the slave trade in Jamaica, and met Burns during his time in Edinburgh.
