According to the creator, Nic Pizzolatto, Rust asks for a beer not just because he is a functioning alcoholic, but also because once he starts drinking, anything he says after that first sip is inadmissible in court since he is legally incompetent while under the influence. Rust went to the interrogation room solely to hear what new information they had on the case and he speaks extensively without giving any new information.
