Located near Naples, Italy, Vesuvius last experienced a major eruption in 1944, towards the end of the Second World War. More than three million people live in the vicinity of the volcano, and in historical and prehistoric times, there was an explosive eruption that destroyed entire settlements and cities around the world. the area... For the new study in Science Advances, researchers closely looked at the four largest eruptions of Vesuvius over the past 10,000 years to better assess whether hazardous events might occur in the future... The four eruptions studied include the Avellino eruption 3,950 years ago, which is considered a possible worst case scenario for a future eruption, and the CE 79 eruption which buried the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum.
