The “Glass Menagerie“ is a game of memories, said Tennessee Williams, the author of the drama. In this work, he dealt with the two themes that accompanied him throughout his life: the family and the middle class, which was threatened with decline. 75 years after the premiere (1944), John Neumeier translates the work into a full-length ballet and brings the Glass Menagerie with music by Charles Ives, Philip Glass and Ned Rorem to the stage of the Hamburg State Opera. The story is simple - it’s about a family. At the kitchen table, conflicts, aggression and feelings break through: with the mother Amanda, who is abandoned, with her artistically inclined son Tom, who has to work in a shoe factory, and with her fragile, dreamy daughter Laura Rose, who loves small glass animals - especially a unicorn. Each of the family members is inextricably linked to the other two - and everyone is unhappy. The hopes of these three people are increasingly focused on a kind of savior. In ballet, the different levels of the action flow into each other and happen simultaneously. Also entangled in the family’s emotions and inner contradictions is the artist Tennessee, whose role John Neumeier has added. The female lead is played by Alina Cojocaru, a long-time principal soloist of London’s Royal Ballet, for whom John Neumeier created the ballet. The company of the Hamburg Ballet under the direction of John Neumeier will dance and the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Luciano Di Martino will make music.
