This piano roll recording demonstrates why Emil Sauer (1862 - 1942) was so highly regarded as one of the greatest pianists of his age. It was recorded in the 1900's while at the height of both his fame and his abilities as a pianist. Sauer plays this youthful work of Brahms at a brisk rhythmic pace, and quite apparent is his neat and elegant style. Note that a phonograph record from the same period of this roll or even one from ten years later could not have accommodated the whole work without cuts either
