Floating flies fished on the surface is one of the most exciting methods and the sight of a large aggressive predatory fish attacking the fly in a big splash can almost give the fisherman a heart attack... Over time, surface flies have been used extensively - but the American fly fisherman and fly tyer Larry Dahlberg started to experiment with the shape of the heads of his flies back in the late 1970's. Instead of having a large surface in the front to splash and “push“ as much water as possible, he changed the shape so that the floating fly would dive instead of splashing. With a strong retrieve the fly could dive into the water and the stronger the pull - the deeper the fly could dive in a quick jerk - something that he discovered even the most skeptical predatory fish had difficulty standing for - a classic style of predator-fly was born.
