Catania airport is expected to remain closed until 6pm on Thursday after the runway was covered in ash when Mount Etna erupted on Wednesday night. Catania airport was closed and flights to and from the Sicilian city were cancelled after Mount Etna erupted, spewing ash and molten lava several kilometres into the air. The volcano erupted on Wednesday night with a column of lava and ash high, according to Italy's Istituto di Geofilica e Vulcanologia (IGV). The IGV said the volcano had calmed down again early Thursday.
