Huge loss for New Zealand's navy - $100m warship burned and sunk The HMNZS Manawanui ran aground while surveying a reef south of Samoa, the crew abandoned the ship after giving a distress call. The ship then caught fire for an unknown reason, but the fire brigade had no equipment to extinguish it at sea. ️ The expensive ship was put into service in 2019. It was bought second-hand in Norway. New Zealand's then defence minister called it a “watershed moment“. Now experts are trying to understand how New Zealand sailors lost the ship so quickly. Source: Global News (EU, USA)
