A candidate in Ecuador's presidential election who claimed criminal gangs were linked to government officials has been shot dead at a rally. Fernando Villavicencio, a member of the country's national assembly, was gunned down as he left the election event in the capital Quito. Drug cartels have been blamed for a recent surge in violence in Ecuador. Mr Villavicencio had said the gangs were linked to officials and had pledged to crack down on corruption and the drug trade.
