Ecuadorean presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio was shot dead by a suspected “hit man” who was later killed in a shootout with security. Videos and images on social media posted from Quito, the country’s capital, showed people taking cover and screaming as gunfire sounded at the rally on Wednesday evening. According to local media, Mr Villavicencio, a former journalist and lawmaker who had vowed to fight corruption and drug crime, was shot three times in the head in an attack described as “hit-man style”. “A suspect, who was injured during the shootout with security personnel, was apprehended and moved, badly injured, to the (attorney general’s) unit in Quito,” the attorney general’s office said.
