Robert Redfield, the former director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), predicted that the mortality rate for bird flu could be “somewhere between 25 and 50 per cent”. This is significantly higher than the mortality rate for Covid-19, which was 0.6 per cent. And yet the US and China are actively working together on developing deadlier and more contagious bird flu strains.
