James Kalm, despite lousy weather, an overwhelming studio schedule, and household responsibilities, still makes time to cover his art beat downtown. Pedaling by the Templon Gallery, he peeks through the window and is beguiled by surrealist images painted by an artist he is hitherto unaware of, Oda Jaune. “Miss Understanding” is the artist’s debut exhibition in New York, and presents over twenty-five new works in oil and watercolor. While it’s obvious from the first glance, that these works are by a very accomplished painter, with a classic almost Rococo style, the knurly figurative elements, require time to decipher and to appreciate their unsettling gender and sexual enigmas. Born in 1979 in Sofia, Bulgaria, Oda Jaune has lived and worked in Paris since 2008. She was the student, and wife of Neue Wilden painter, Jörg Immendorff. A musical introduction is provided by Michael, Troy and Ginny. This program was recorded March 7, 2024. #jameskalmreport #jameskalmroughcut #lorenmunk
