Known as Tecnokart since 1963, Tecno was the name given to the Italian company when the founders, the Pederzani brothers, decided of not just building and racing karts but also competing in the top car championships. Tecno made its Formula 3 debut in 1966 and only two years later they managed to conquer their first title followed by three more, until 1971. At the same time, the team also competed successfully in Formula 2, with Clay Regazzoni winning the European championship in one of their cars. Following this great success in junior formulae and encouraged by an interested sponsor (Count Rossi of the Martini & Rossi brand) who was prepared to back the brothers in an attempt to build an F1 car, the official Tecno debut in the major championshio occurred in 1972 with two Tecno PA123s, driven by Derek Bell and Nanni Galli. However, the car had many problems and it was always unreliable with both chassis and engine prone to breaking. The team also tried to use a Cosworth DFV V8 in one of the two cars but most of the races were done using the Tecno Series-P 180° V12 engine, which yes it was sharing some similarities with the Ferrari Tipo 001 engine used on the 312B but it was born from an idea of the Pederzani brothers and engine builer Renato Armaroli. The end of Tecno F1 experience came during the 1973 season following the lack of success due to the underfunded and underdeveloped cars (Tecno PA312B and Tecno E731).
