In less then ten minutes, at 2:11 Moscow time, the first domestic station in almost 50 years, Luna-25, will launch from Vostochny to the Moon. It is expected to become the first station in world history to achieve a soft landing in the circumpolar region with complex terrain; its predecessors all landed in the equatorial zone. In a video, “Roscosmos“ explains how the flight will unfold. Nine minutes after liftoff, the Fregat upper stage will detach from the rocket’s third stage, activating its propulsion engine twice to set the station on its course to the Moon. This marks the first stage. The second stage involves the actual flight to the Moon, spanning about 5 days, during which trajectory corrections will occur: the first adjustment after 1.5 days from launch, and the second adjustment a day before entering Moon’s orbit. The third stage commences with the station’s propulsion system slowing it down, allowing the station to enter a circular circumpolar orbit around the Moon at an altitude of 100 km. This phase will last 3 days. During the fourth stage, “Luna-25“ will transition to an elliptical landing orbit with a minimum altitude of 18 km. Following calculations, a soft landing is anticipated in the South Pole area of the Moon, tentatively scheduled for August 21st, as reported by a scientist from the Russian Academy of Sciences to RIA Novosti.
