For Turkmens, horses are one of the main sources of national pride. 5000 years ago, this tribal people bred the Akhal-Teke. It is considered to be the most beautiful breed in the world. Locals believe the blood of wild horses runs in their veins, and call them ‘heavenly creatures’. In Turkmenistan, everyone is linked with the Akhal-Teke. ’We Turkmens can’t live without horses,’ explained Aybike Babalyeva. These are not just words for her: her family is famous in the country for their contributions to horse breeding. Our new film by Elena Nurkunaite and Artyom Somov, ‘Akhal-Teke Horses: Heavenly Creatures’, looks at the history of the oldest horse breed in the world and the people who consider horses their family. The documentary was awarded a special prize at the ‘Rassvet Arkadaga’ International Film Festival.
