1957-Choteau, Sweet Grass Pennsylvania-born Robert E. “Curly Bob” Lawrence moved to Montana in 1945 after serving four years as a Navy Gunner’s Mate in the South Pacific. Bob worked for Monarch Lumber, operating yards in Augusta, Brady, & Sunburst. The “Rocky Mountain Ramblers” were formed in 1946, by Choteau accordion player Ed Obernolte, whom would later leave the band to start a polka group called “The Happy Four.” Curly Bob took over as frontman for The Ramblers in ‘48, playing around northwest MT for years. In 1957, they released a few 45s on Bob’s own “Western” record label, based out of Sunburst. Around this time, Bob opened a bar in Sweet Grass called, “Curly Bob’s Supper Club” & in 1964, he ran for the office of Lieutenant Governor.
