Thank you :) We are very pleased to release a new mastering of Bruno Walter's legendary version with the NYP. How fortunate to have this sound document, from a pupil of Gustav Maher. Born in Berlin in 1876, Bruno Walter met the Austrian composer Gustav Mahler at the age of 17, when the latter hired him as an assistant at the Hamburg Opera. A great friendship was quickly born between the two men, and in 1901, after having taken several positions as Kappellmeister in Germany, the young Bruno Walter joined the composer at the Vienna Opera, and accompanied him in his important work of renewal of the institution. In the 1920s, Bruno Walter successively conducted music in Münich, the Berlin Municipal Opera, and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. In the 1930s, he became one of the Nazi regime's pet peeves and went into exile in the United States in 1939, where he was invited by numerous ensembles, notably the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, of which he was musical advisor between 1947 and 1949, and the Columbia Orchestra, with which he made numerous recordings. *Click to activate the English subtitles for the presentation* (00:00-03:00) Mahler - The Song of the Earth (.: Kathleen Ferrier, Bruno Walter, Wierner Philharmoniker): Gustav Mahler PLAYLIST (reference recordings):
