Russian Fencer Gets The Point From Ukrainian Opponent Ukrainian fencer Olha Kharlan wasn’t happy with just putting Russian opponent Anna Smirnova to the sword in their Sabre Women’s Senior Individual qualifier at the World Championships in Milan on Wednesday, also refusing to shake her opponent’s hand after their clash. The Ukrainian Sports Ministry dropped their ban on athletes competing against Russian or Belarus athletes competing as neutrals late on Tuesday night. Smirnova reportedly waited for over half an hour for Kharlan to return and offer the handshake that traditionally concludes a bout, but much like Ukrainian tennis star Elina Svitolina at Wimbledon this month, four-time world sabre champion Kharlan had stated long ago she wouldn’t acknowledge Russian or Belarusian opponents.
