My coworker, Alan Fontenot, made an ionocraft. High voltage powers the metal base (collector) and a thin wire (corona) a few inches above the base. The corona ionizes the air by stripping the electrons from it, which causes the ionized air to repel from the corona wire and attract to the collector base, providing thrust. This is the same principle used in ionic air yes we smelled that familiar ozone smell.
