Not only was the amount of rain exceptionally large, but also the short period in which it fell contributed to the chaos. “In half an hour, 45 minutes, 70 millimeters had already fallen,“ the expert continued. This is four times more than sewage systems in the city can handle at once. In Enschede, many areas still have a sewage system designed for only 20-millimeter rain. The rapid accumulation of water overwhelmed the city's drainage infrastructure completely. Emergency services were immediately dispatched to assist with the widespread flooding. Residents reported significant water damage to both homes and businesses throughout the city. Cars were submerged in several neighborhoods, causing extensive damage.
