Michael Solovyev. Herðubreið Volcano, Iceland. From the photo made by an anonymous channel member. @DANIELSMITHArtistColor watercolor paints on Saunders Waterford Rough paper, 22x11 inches. “Herðubreið means “wide shoulders“ and the shape was formed by the glacier many hundred years ago. The table volcano is located in the North-Eastern part of our highlands, so North-East of Iceland. It stands alone for probably 120 km in diameter in an ocean of lava sandy hills. The next city is about 170 km away, the next and only farm probably 25 km. If the weather is fine, you can see Herðubreið from the road no. 1 (it is the circle road around Iceland) and if you see this mountain, you can not stop looking at it. It always shows up from time to time, just for short moment. We have seen our mountain a hundred times, but every time we are always surprised in a way. Of course the shape doesn't change but in different weather it looks different. And when you are very lucky and the weather is a little bit foggy and mystery, it is very easy to believe all the stories about elves and trolls. Maybe this is also the reason why Herðubreið got painted so often. There is one special artist in Iceland who painted only this mountain and horses – Stefán Jónsson Stórval (born 1908) who grew up at the next farm to Herðubreið. For many years it has been his daily view and for many years it has been his daily duty taking care of the sheep and horses close to this mountain. Unsurprisingly, he wanted to paint “his” mountain. People didn't like his naïve style but it didn't stop him from painting again and again. Unfortunately, people only started buying his paintings after he passed away in 1994. Today his paintings get dealt as a Picasso. Stefán has been one of this typical strong characters of the old time, which is not so old in Iceland. His fathers farm was really isolated from everything and as young people always want do, they want leave their home. So, one day Stefán decided to leave and he went to the next small city Vopnafördur, only 170km north. Unfortunately he started walking in the winter time and he went straight into very bad weather. Nobody believed to see him again but after 4 weeks he has shown up at the first farm close to Vopnafördur. He was closer to death as to life but he survived. When he was well again he has been a different man, more crazy, not from this planet but this makes him stronger and more unique. Thus, Herðubreið is well known to every Icelander and all the tourist know this mountain because it is so unique and fantastic.“ Join our project, Travel by Art, where you can submit your photographs for a chance for them to become watercolors!
