Fajita is a Tex-Mex dish consisting of meat and vegetables wrapped in a tortilla (a soft wheat flatbread) and grilled and sliced into strips. Beef is most often used as the meat ingredient, but pork, chicken, and sometimes seafood are also used. Sour cream, guacamole, salsa, pico de gallo, cheese, and tomatoes are often added to the meat. According to legend, fajitas were invented by craftsmen from the region on the Texas-Mexico border near the Rio Grande, where cowboys used to live. They got the leftover meat after slaughtering cattle. The name comes from the Spanish faja, meaning “strip“, which refers to the way the meat is cut for fajitas. For those who don't often enjoy Mexican food, fajitas may seem like a burrito that for some reason was served disassembled. Fajitas are a popular Mexican dish all over the world.
