The Western Wall is for Jews the holiest site on earth. For two millennia pious Jewish pilgrims have flocked here, to pray and to kiss the ancient ashlars. Yet, in 1948, when Israel at last became an independent nation, the Jewish Quarter of Jerusalem‘s Old City, including the Wall, fell to the Arabs. Fast forward to the year 1967. During the Six Day War, East Jerusalem was reclaimed by the Israelis. The Wall was in Jewish hands for the first time since the year 70 CE. In short order a crowd of soldiers were standing in front of the hallowed stones, weeping. It is a story worth retelling…
