Keir Starmer has shown interest in an Albanian migrant processing scheme similar to one developed by Italy. Last year, Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni made a deal to open two centres in Albania to process 36,000 migrant claims annually. Starmer said he is keen to see how the scheme works and discuss Meloni's views on migration to help the UK tackle its small boats crisis. Italy has seen a 62% drop in illegal migrants, from 118,000 to 44,500, over the past year.
