The full story of how a corrupt British cop ruined one of the most important police penetrations of the global underworld elite. Natalie Mottram’s big mouth revealed the police hack of EncroChat — a gangland phone system — letting thousands of gangsters, drug lords, hit men and crooks off the hook. More than two years I fingered Natalie Mottram as the leak that shut down the global operation that was secretly listening in on conversations that gangsters thought were private. Now we know I was right. Natalie admitted it all in court. While working on a police task force she was blabbing its secrets to criminal friends — a huge secret, in fact, revealing that EncroChat, an encrypted phone system used by gangsters in many countries, had been penetrated by law enforcement agencies who were now monitoring the supposedly private underworld communications. Her snitching ended the whole operation. EncroChat was a high-tech, seemingly impenetrable, encrypted phone system. Gangsters thought their communications were forever secret, anonymous and untraceable. After years of work, police in France managed to place a hacking tool into the servers EncroChat used. A collaboration of French and Dutch investigators, that later included British police, began a highly secretive operation of monitoring millions of messages and images. It unlocked a door to a vast criminal underworld. And Natalie Mottram slammed it shut again. The National Crime Agency, known as the NCA, which is Britain’s version of the FBI, coordinated the U.K.’s end of the EncroChat exploit, codenamed Operation Venetic. It started drawing data from the secret hack on April 1, 2020. It took only about three weeks for Natalie to blab about it. Natalie, now 24, is from Warrington, an English town halfway between Manchester and Liverpool. She was working as a civilian intelligence researcher at the North West Regional Organised Crime Unit. By April 24, 2020, Natalie had already told Jonathan Kay, a criminally connected friend, about the police penetration. He told others and warnings messages were sent to other users. The leak was disastrous for police operations in several countries. Police traced the leak to Natalie and she was arrested June 12, 2020, but not before she again alerted Kay and others. That evening, an anonymous emergency alert was pushed out to all EncroChat users: “We can no longer guarantee the security of your device.” Users were told to “power off and physically dispose your device immediately.” CREDITS: Music is “Dissappointment” by Kevin MacLeod // “Boyz” by KINO-KLAN ' KATTIPER; Animated maps created using Google Earth Studio; Some street images from Google Street View; Non-police photos of Natalie are from public Facebook page ; Silhouette of man at airport Video by Vlada Karpovich, computer screens by mikhail-nilov, from Pexels; EncroChat phone use video is from the “This is Just the Beginning” video posted by Sylak 88: ~ The Mob Reporter is a professional journalist bringing you real-life mob, police and true crime news, investigative journalism and educational videos. ~ PLEASE SUBSCRIBE: ~ Please subscribe to my other channels: • Crime Watch: • Crime in Italy: ~ To read my written journalism: Please like, share, comment and subscribe.
