The Slavic civilization. Slavic civilization dates back more than 2000 years. Unlike other civilizations which built buildings in stone, the Slavs used wood as materials. This is explained by the place where the Slavs lived, which was close to the forests. The wood was therefore used as a raw material for the construction of houses or temples and fortifications. The Dragon Wall in Ukraine is a woodland fortification built against the nomads of the steppes with a total length of 1000 km. A typical gord was a group of wooden houses built in rows or circles, surrounded by one or more rings of earthen and wooden walls, a palisade and or a moat. Some ropes were ring-shaped, with a round, oval, or sometimes polygonal fence or wall surrounding a hollow. Others, built on a natural hill or on an artificial mound, were cone-shaped. Those that had a natural defense on one side, such as a river or lake, were usually horseshoe shaped. Most of the gords were built in densely populated areas on sites with special natural benefits. While Slavic tribes united to form states, gords were also built for defensive purposes in less populated border areas. The Gords in which the rulers resided or who were on the trade routes developed rapidly. Near the gord, or below in elevation, were formed small communities of servants, merchants, artisans and others who served the higher inhabitants of gord. Each of these communities was known as the suburb (Polish: podgrodzie). Its inhabitants could take shelter in the walls of the gord in case of danger. Eventually, the suburb acquired its own fence or wall. In the High Middle Ages, the gord generally evolved into a castle or citadel (kremlin) and the suburbs into the city. Like the Prague Castle, which is according to the Guinness Book of Records, is the largest ancient castle in the world, occupying an area of almost 70,000 square meters at around 570 meters in length and an average of around 130 meters wide . The castle is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Prague, attracting over 1.8 million visitors a year. We will see in another video other aspects of Slavic civilization.
