The flooding on Wednesday, September 27, hit central Greece for the second time this month, with the city of Volos particularly hard hit after a previous storm front killed 17 people and caused extensive damage Authorities declared a curfew in Volos, a city of nearly 140,000 people, as the storm named Elias made landfall, quickly turning streets into rivers. Earlier, the storm caused flooding on the island of Evia near Athens. Much of Volos was left without electricity and parts of the local hospital were flooded, although the facility continued to operate. At least eight villages outside Volos were also evacuated. Elias is expected to subside on Friday.
