Candide is a protagonist of a sci-fi novel 'Snail on the Slope' by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky. Novel consist of two loosely coupled parts: 'Directorate' (was published in 1968) and 'Forest' (1966). Both stories are related to endless, mystical, almost sacral territory called the Forest. Authors don't name it's size or placement in the world. But as you can notice reading the book, the Forest may occupy an area of small country, because of it has many villages situated far away from each over. Most of the territory consist of fields, hills, marshes and woods where strange creatures live and dangerous things happen. First novel narrate story about linguist Peretz, who have been dreaming about visiting the Forest for years. He works in the Directorate located near the Forest on a high cliff. But due to Directorate`s life is full of absurdity Peretz cannot fulfill his wish. All change when he finally decides to leave the Directorate. Second part is about a Directorate employee Candide.
