Just one month after the Protocol of Corfu was signed by the Albanians on June 23, 1914, war broke out in Europe. Officially starting on July 28, 1914, the war threw Albania into disarray. Soon chaos would ensure between all the warring factions within Albania and against seven invading armies. After WW1 ended, Albania paid a steep price for its independence, warring the Italians and Greeks on the south and the invading armies of Montenegro and Serbia on the north, Albania lost 15% of its population, and almost 300 villages were destroyed by hostile armies in order to change the ethnic and religious character of the regions inhabited by Albanians (according to the Carnegie Endowment).
