ANGELIC UPSTARTS live solidarity 11 leave me alone Formed in South Shields, in the North East of England during 1977, the Angelic Upstarts were, along with Sham 69, amongst the first to represent an overtly political side to the punk rock phenomenon. Their working class background and hatred of racism and bigotry became the platform for their music, which was unsurprisingly extremely hard-edged and uncompromising. Front-man Mensi was a legend in the making. In 1978 they recorded and released their first single 'Murder of Liddle Towers' independently only to have it picked up by Small Wonder who released it nationally to commercial and critical acclaim. It wasn't long before Sham's lead singer Jimmy Pursey had them in the studio producing their debut album 'Teenage Warning' which spawned the iconic single 'I'm an Upstart'.
